Alcala Gurri beat Olivieri 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 in Seville, winning the match on return: he converted seven break points to his opponent's five and broke twice in the closing stages of the decider. Olivieri, who did not hit a single ace or double fault all match, could not match that pressure on serve.
The first set was one-way traffic: Alcala Gurri broke immediately at 1-0, again at 3-0 and once more at 6-1, while saving all four break points he faced. The second set turned into a break-fest with seven breaks in total, and Olivieri took it by breaking at 5-6 after Alcala Gurri had levelled at 5-5. In the third, Alcala Gurri broke at 4-2, was pegged back at 4-3, then broke again at 5-3 to close it out.
The serve numbers explain the gap: Alcala Gurri landed 74 of 93 first serves (80%) against 72% for Olivieri and won 51 service points to 48, holding eight of 13 service games to his rival's six. Olivieri was the more reliable on second serve — 27 of 27 in play and 44% of those points won — but the extra breaks went the other way.
