Pietro Basile beat Alexander Oetzbach 6-0, 7-6 in Biella, closing out a straight-sets win after a far tighter second set than the opener suggested. The first set was one-way traffic: three breaks and six games in a row for Basile, who won 12 of 16 receiving points he contested.
Basile broke in the opening game of the match (0-1), again at 0-3 and 0-5 to take the bagel without facing a break point. The second set turned into a trading contest with ten breaks of serve in all, Basile going ahead at 0-1, 3-2, 4-3, 5-4 and 5-6 while Oetzbach hit back each time, including at 6-6 to force the tie-break, which Basile took.
Oetzbach actually served bigger over the match, with six aces to four and a 61% first-serve rate against 55%, but he converted only one break point to Basile's four and won 59 points to his opponent's 73. Basile's second-serve numbers were the difference: 57% of points won behind it, against 42% for Oetzbach.
