Newell's Old Boys secured a narrow 1-0 win over Talleres despite being second best for large spells. The home side took the lead just after the hour mark and then held on even after a late sending-off.
The only goal came in the 55th minute when Matías Cóccaro found the net for Newell's. The match turned scrappy in the second half, with Román Riquelme receiving two yellow cards – the second in the 86th minute – meaning Newell's finished with ten men, but Talleres could not find a breakthrough.
Talleres dominated possession with 67% and had 17 shots to Newell's 11, yet they failed to score. Newell's goalkeeper made five saves, while the hosts created three big chances and scored one, compared to Talleres' single big chance which they missed.
