Nakashima beat Rinderknech 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 in Montreal, taking the opening set in a tiebreak and the decider with a break at 5-5. Rinderknech had levelled the match by taking the second set 7-5.
The first set swung around four breaks: Rinderknech moved ahead 1-0 and 4-3, while Nakashima hit back at 1-1 and 5-5 before winning the tiebreak. Rinderknech then broke in game 12 of the second set to take it 7-5 and force a decider. In the third set, Nakashima made the decisive move at 5-5 and closed it out 7-5.
The stats highlighted Nakashima's cleaner serving: he made one double fault to Rinderknech's five and won 58% of second-serve points, against 44% for Rinderknech, even though Rinderknech edged the ace count 15-14.
