Brandon Nakashima beat Taylor Fritz 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in Cincinnati, taking the deciding set after Fritz had squared the match. He did it despite facing a 22-12 deficit in aces and winning fewer total points, 88 to 94.
The first set went to a tiebreak with no service breaks, and Nakashima edged it after saving the only break point of the set. Fritz levelled in the second by breaking in game three at 2-1. In the decider, Fritz broke at 3-2, but Nakashima answered immediately at 3-3 and then broke at 3-5 to take a decisive lead.
Fritz's serving numbers were imposing — 22 aces and 82% first-serve points won — but Nakashima saved four of six break points and won the key moments of the match.
