V. Gaubas beat T. Monteiro 7-6, 7-6 in the San Marino singles, coming through both tiebreaks. He saved four of the five break points he faced and was the better player in the key moments.
The first set was a serve-dominated affair with no breaks. Monteiro broke first in the second set at 2-4 in the sixth game, but Gaubas broke back at 4-5 in game nine, then took the tiebreak to close out the match.
Monteiro hit six aces to Gaubas's three and the pair finished level on total points at 82 each, yet Gaubas converted the deciding points in both tiebreaks to seal the win.
