Diane Parry defeated Elise Mertens 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in Monterrey, recovering from a second-set bagel to win the deciding set. The decisive shift came in the third set, where Parry broke twice after Mertens had swept the middle set 6-0.
In the opener, Parry broke for 2-0 and again at 6-4, with Mertens answering with a break at 4-3 to pull within a game. Mertens then took control, breaking in games 1, 3 and 5 to complete a 6-0 second set. The decider turned on Parry's breaks for 2-0 and 5-1, and though Mertens pulled one back at 5-2, Parry closed it out.
The numbers tell an unusual story. Mertens won more games, 13 to 12, and broke serve five times to Parry's four, yet it was Parry who came through.
