Bondár took the opener 6-3 after breaking at 1-3. In the second set, Mertens raced ahead with breaks at 2-0 and 4-0; Bondár fought back at 5-2 and 5-4, but Mertens broke again at 6-4 to level. In the decider, Bondár struck at 0-1, Mertens answered at 2-2, Bondár moved ahead at 3-4, and Mertens broke at 4-4 before sealing the set at 6-4.
The key edge was Mertens' returning: she won 46% of points against Bondár's first serve to Bondár's 24% on Mertens' first serve, and finished with seven aces and 43 return points won. Bondár actually won more total points, 92-91, but Mertens won the bigger points in the closing games despite 10 double faults.
