Johnson S. beat Martin A. 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the Lexington men's singles, recovering from a first-set loss with a tiebreak win before taking control in the decider. Johnson broke twice in the final set, in the opening game and again in the last game, to close out the match.
Martin took the opener despite Johnson levelling at 3-3, breaking again in game nine to lead 5-4 and closing out the set. The second set was a trade of breaks: Johnson went up 3-1, Martin hit back to 4-3, Johnson made it 5-3 and Martin answered to 5-4 before Johnson won the tiebreak. Johnson then broke in the first game of the third set, faced no break points, and sealed it with another break.
Johnson's return game was the key edge: he won 43 receiver points to Martin's 30, and his second-serve return percentage was 55% to Martin's 45%. He also finished with seven aces and 95 total points to 87, although he did fire six double faults.
