Liudmila Samsonova beat Barbora Krejčíková 6-1, 7-5 in Toronto, taking a one-sided opener before squeezing through a much tighter second set. Samsonova converted four break points to Krejčíková's one and saved four of the five break points she faced.
In the first set, Samsonova broke in game two to lead 2-0 and again at 5-1 in game six to wrap it up. Krejčíková broke back in game four of the second set to lead 3-1, but Samsonova hit back in game seven and then landed the decisive break in game 11 at 6-5 before serving out the match.
Samsonova hit only two aces and five double faults, while Krejčíková had four aces and a higher first-serve percentage (53% to 48%). The key edge came behind second serves, where Samsonova won 56% of points to Krejčíková's 35%, and she finished with a clear 70-51 lead in total points.
