Sinja Kraus rallied from a set down to defeat Darja Semenistaja 6–3, 3–6, 6–2 in the first round of WTA Hamburg. The win was built on a dominant third set in which Kraus broke the Latvian three times and faced only one break point, saving it to close out the match.
The opening set featured five breaks; Semenistaja converted three of her seven break chances to take it 6–3. Kraus responded in the second set by winning the first four games, holding off a brief Semenistaja fightback to level the match. In the decider, Kraus broke immediately at 0–1, then again at 0–3 and 0–5, before Semenistaja broke back at 1–5. Kraus served out the next game for the win.
Kraus saved 10 of 16 break points overall (62%) while converting eight of her own. The decisive edge came in the third set, where she won 91% of points on Semenistaja’s first serve (11/12) and Semenistaja managed just one first-serve point (1/12, 8%).
