Denis Shapovalov defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at the US Open, riding a dominant serving performance that produced 17 aces and 82% of first-serve points won.
The first set was a battle of breaks: Shapovalov broke in the opening game and again late to edge it 6-4. Kecmanovic levelled by winning the second 6-4 with breaks in the third and seventh games, but Shapovalov turned the tide in the third, coming from an early break down to take it 6-4 with breaks in the fourth and sixth games. He then stormed through the fourth 6-1, breaking in the second and sixth games.
Shapovalov's serving was the deciding factor — he struck 17 aces to Kecmanovic's three and won 82% of points behind his first delivery, despite 11 double faults. Kecmanovic saved eight of 13 break points he faced, but could not hold off the relentless pressure on his own serve.
