Lys E. came from a set down to beat Kawa K. 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in Cincinnati, powered by a six-game burst in the second set and three breaks in the decider.
Kawa edged the opener 7-5, breaking in game 1 and again at 1-4 before Lys levelled with breaks at 2-4 and 5-5; Kawa responded with a break at 5-6. Lys then dominated set two, erasing Kawa's early break with breaks at 1-1, 3-1 and 5-1 to win 6-1. In the decider, Lys broke at 1-0 and, after trailing 1-3, broke back at 3-4 before sealing the match with a break at 5-4.
The first-serve numbers told the story: Lys landed 70% of first serves and won 59% of those points, while Kawa managed just 44% in and won 47%. Kawa hit three aces to Lys's zero and had a 42-41 edge in receiving points, but Lys converted seven of her 15 break chances to close out the win.
