Mark Lajal came from a set down to beat Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 in Cassis, turning the match around with steadier serving and sharper returning. Lajal converted four break points to his opponent's two and hit just three double faults against nine.
The opener went with serve after an early exchange of breaks — Gueymard Wayenburg struck at 2-0 in game two, Lajal levelled at 3-2 in game five — before the Frenchman took the tie-break. Lajal's break in game eight of the second set, at 3-5, squared the match, and after another trade of breaks to open the decider (Lajal at 0-1, Gueymard Wayenburg immediately back at 1-1), his break in game seven at 3-4 settled it.
The decider told the story on serve: Lajal landed 78% of first serves, winning 11 of 14 points behind them, while Gueymard Wayenburg managed only 44% and took just four receiving points in the set. Across the match Lajal won 49 return points to 27.
