Gombos broke in the third and fifth games of the first set to take it 6-2. In the second, he broke Paulson in the opening game, again at 1-4, and sealed the match with another break at 1-6 for 6-1.
The first serve was the decisive weapon. Gombos won 95% of points behind it (21/22), while Paulson managed only 62% (13/21) and was outpointed 53 to 31 overall.
