Marcos Giron recovered from a set down to beat Pablo Llamas Ruiz 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in Montreal. After being outplayed in the opener, Giron turned the match around by converting five break points and saving six of the nine break chances he faced.
Llamas Ruiz broke twice in the first set, in the opening game and at 3-0, before closing it out 6-2. Giron hit back with breaks for 3-1 and 5-1 in the second set, and although he dropped serve at 5-2, he took it 6-3. In the decider Giron broke at 2-1, 4-1 and 6-1, conceding only one game.
The decisive edge came on second serve: Giron won 19 of 37 points behind his second delivery, compared with 10 of 28 for Llamas Ruiz. Giron also put together a run of six games in a row during the comeback.
