The first set hinged on a single break at 7-5, as Gentzsch broke Kumstat in the 12th game. In the second set, Gentzsch broke early for 2-0, but Kumstat fought back to level at 4-3 with a break of his own. Gentzsch then broke again in the 10th game to clinch the match.
Gentzsch won 83% of points behind his first serve (30/36) but lost all five points on his second serve in the second set (0/6). Despite hitting seven aces to Kumstat's five and committing five double faults to one, he managed to edge the match as total points were level at 55 apiece.
