Gauff beat Sönmez 6-3, 6-4 at the US Open, taking control with a dominant first-serve display. She won 13 of 14 points behind her first serve and needed just one break in the opener.
Gauff made the key move in the opening set by breaking to lead 4-2. In the second, she broke in the first game, Sönmez levelled at 2-2, and Gauff struck again to lead 4-3 before closing it out.
The standout number was Gauff’s first-serve edge: she landed just 50% in, but won 93% of points when she connected, with three aces. Sönmez had no aces, won only 12 service points, and did not save the one break point she faced.
