Gauff beat Korneeva 6-3, 6-1 in Toronto in a match controlled by her return game. Korneeva won only one service game across the two sets, while Gauff’s pressure on return settled the contest early.
Korneeva broke first in the opener at 1-0, but Gauff broke straight back in game two and added breaks in games four and six to lead 5-1; a late Korneeva break in game seven only delayed the 6-3 set. Gauff then broke in game one of the second set, and after Korneeva levelled in game two, she broke again in games three, five and seven to seal the win.
Gauff finished with three aces to none, put 67% of her first serves in and won 61 points to 47. The standout number was on return of second serve, where Gauff took 79% of those points against Korneeva.
