Pegula came from a set down to beat Fręch 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Toronto. After a slow start, Pegula had far more success behind her first serve and broke Fręch five times across the match.
Fręch broke for 2-0 in the opener and, after Pegula hit back to 2-3, broke again to 2-4 before closing out 6-3. Pegula then went ahead 2-0 in set two, was pegged back to 2-1, but broke again for 3-1 and levelled the match 6-3. In the decider, she broke in the opening game and moved to 3-0 without facing a break point.
The standout number was Pegula’s first-serve points won: 69% for the match against Fręch’s 58%. After the opening set, Pegula dropped serve only once and converted five of her seven break chances.
