Jacob Fearnley defeated Zhe Li 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the ATP Challenger in Bloomfield Hills, dominating behind his serve and breaking twice in each set. The Briton did not face a single break point across the match, while converting two of six chances on return.
Fearnley broke early in the first set at 3-1 (game 4) and held comfortably to close it out 6-3. In the second set, he again struck first, breaking at 2-1 (game 3), and never allowed Zheng a look at his own serve, sealing the win on serve at 5-4.
Fearnley’s serve was the decisive weapon: he hit seven aces, won 84% of first-serve points, and was particularly sharp in the opening set, where he won all 15 first-serve points. Zheng, by contrast, managed only a 34% win rate on second serve and saved four of six break points, but could not manufacture a break opportunity.
