FC Groningen beat FC Utrecht 2-1 in the Eredivisie. They went ahead early through Brynjólfur Darri Willumsson and added a second after the break from Thom van Bergen, enough to survive a late Adrian Blake strike.
Willumsson put Groningen in front in the 8th minute, and Van Bergen doubled the lead just after half-time in the 48th. Utrecht's reply arrived in the 79th minute through Blake, which set up a nervy finish. Groningen dealt with that late pressure to take the points.
The result does not reflect the balance of chances: Utrecht had five big chances to Groningen's two and a higher expected-goals total (2.19 to 1.55). Groningen were more efficient in front of goal and defended their lead, with six saves and 59% possession underpinning the win.
