Schalke 04 advanced with a 5-2 extra-time win at Hallescher FC in the DFB Pokal first round. Schalke dominated the tie statistically, but were twice pegged back before three goals in the additional 30 minutes settled it.
Vin Kastull put Hallescher ahead on the stroke of half-time. Dejan Ljubičić equalised in the 62nd minute and Edin Džeko made it 2-1 in the 81st, only for Niclas Stierlin to force extra time with a 90th-minute leveller. Moussa Sylla, Chukwubuike Adamu and Džeko again all scored in extra time to complete the 5-2 win.
The margin of Schalke's control was clear in the numbers: 74% possession, 26 shots to 10, 11 on target to five and seven big chances. Hallescher's goalkeeper made six saves to keep the tie alive, but Edin Džeko proved the difference with two goals and an assist.
