Moez Echargui edged Billy Harris 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 in Cassis, coming through a decider that went all the way to a tie-break. Echargui won it despite being outscored overall, taking 107 points to Harris's 113 and converting seven breaks to his opponent's nine.
The opening set swung repeatedly, with Harris breaking at 0-1 and 2-3 before Echargui hit back at 2-2, then broke at 5-5 and again at 7-5 to close it out. Harris dominated the second, breaking at 0-1, 0-3 and 0-5 on the way to 6-1, and the third stayed frantic: Echargui led after breaks at 2-1 and 4-1, only for Harris to level with breaks at 5-3 and 5-5, and after Echargui broke at 6-5 Harris broke straight back at 6-6 to force the tie-break.
The deciding numbers were on serve under pressure: Echargui saved eight of ten break points in the third set and won 24 service points to Harris's 19 there. Harris's 10 double faults across the match, six of them in the decider, and his 8% return of his own second serve points won in that set left him short.
