Fomin took the only break of the opener in game 9, leading 5-4 and then serving out for the set. Dougaz answered quickly in the second, breaking in game 4 at 3-1 and again in game 6 at 5-1. In the decider, Fomin moved 2-0 ahead after his game 2 break, but Dougaz broke back at 4-5 in game 9 and then broke again at 6-5 in game 11.
The second set proved the turning point: Dougaz put 71% of first serves in, saved both break points he faced, and committed no double faults, while Fomin landed just 30% of first serves and made four double faults. Overall, Dougaz won 12 of 13 service games and edged the match 88-85 on total points.
