De Minaur beat Fery 7-5, 7-6 in two sets in Cincinnati. The opening set was full of breaks, and the second was decided only in a tie-break after the lead swung both ways.
In the opener, Fery broke for 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4, but de Minaur answered each time before taking the decisive break at 5-7. De Minaur then led 5-1 in the second set with breaks at 1-3 and 1-5; Fery fought back with breaks at 2-5, 4-5 and 6-5, but de Minaur levelled at 6-6 and won the tie-break.
The serving numbers told the story. De Minaur hit eight aces to Fery's two, won 74% of points on his first serve and saved all three break points he faced.
