Martin Damm raced past Kimmer Coppejans 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of Washington, never facing a break point after the opening set. The American converted five of six break opportunities and won 85% of first-serve points, while Coppejans could only manage a 55% win rate on his first delivery.
Damm broke to lead 2-1 in the first set and again at 4-1, closing it out 6-2. The second set was a complete rout: Damm broke in the very first game, then again at 3-0 and 5-0, sealing the bagel on his second match point. Coppejans won just three points on return in the second set.
Damm saved both break points he faced, while Coppejans saved only one of six. The American also doubled his opponent in aces (2-1) and committed half as many double faults (2-4), finishing with a 46-26 total points advantage.
