The winner came late, breaking a deadlock that had held since kickoff. Rochdale had 51% of the ball but could not find a way past Colchester. Earlier, Rob Hunt, Harvey Gilmour and Daniel Moss were all booked.
Both goalkeepers made four saves, and the expected-goals figure read 0.00 for each side. Colchester registered five shots on target to Rochdale's four, and it was the home side's late finish that settled a close contest.
