Josh Koroma put Chesterfield ahead in the 22nd minute. Logan Dobbs and Kyle McFadzean were booked before half-time, and Ronan Chapman Hale levelled for Gillingham in the 58th minute. Chesterfield pushed for a winner but Gillingham held on.
The telling numbers were Chesterfield's 24 shots, ten on target, and 458 accurate passes against Gillingham's 238. Yet Gillingham scored with their only shot on target, a reminder that dominance does not always decide a match.
