Michelsen beat Cerundolo 6-3, 6-4 in Montreal, taking a tight straight-sets win by protecting his serve and landing the key breaks. He held all nine service games and saved all nine break points he faced.
Michelsen moved in front early in the opener, breaking for 2-0 in game two, and carried that lead to 6-3. The second set turned in game nine, when he broke again to lead 5-4 and closed out the match 6-4.
The standout number was Michelsen's break-point defence: he saved 9/9, going 5/5 in the first set and 4/4 in the second. Cerundolo had more aces and a better first-serve win rate, but could not convert any of those chances, and Michelsen's 70%-43% edge on second-serve points proved decisive.
