Cambridge United beat Wigan Athletic 3-2 in League One. The home side raced into a three-goal lead inside 52 minutes, and although Wigan fought back with two late goals, Cambridge held on for the win.
Kelland Watts opened the scoring in the third minute with Mamadou Jobe providing the assist. Louis Appéré doubled the lead in the 34th minute, and Isaac Heath made it 3-0 in the 52nd. Sonny Perkins pulled one back for Wigan in the 69th minute, and Akeel Higgins, set up by Dara Costelloe, reduced the deficit to 3-2 four minutes later, but Cambridge saw the game out.
Wigan dominated possession with 64% and had more shots (18 to 17) and a higher expected goals count (2.72 to 1.96). Cambridge, however, were more clinical, putting six shots on target to Wigan's four, and took their chances when it mattered.
