Burnley edged out Notts County 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the EFL Cup first round. Callum Roberts gave the visitors a 42nd-minute lead, but Zian Flemming equalised two minutes after the restart to force a shootout.
Roberts struck from Nick Tsaroulla's assist to put Notts County ahead against the run of play. Flemming replied in the 47th minute from Marcus Edwards' pass, and although Burnley pressed for a winner, the tie ended level and went to spot-kicks.
Burnley dominated possession with 74% and had 12 shots to six, but only four on target, with the visitors' goalkeeper making three saves. Flemming's quick equaliser proved the decisive moment in normal time, though he was booked late on as the game grew tense.
