Raul Brancaccio came from a set down to beat Pedro Llamas Ruiz 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in Seville, turning the match around by finally getting hold of his opponent's serve. After losing the opener without a single break point converted, he broke three times across the last two sets and dropped serve only once all match.
Llamas Ruiz took the first set with the only break of it, landing it in the 11th game at 5-6 on his way to 7-5, and he was the sharper player behind his first serve there (19/23 points won, 83%). Brancaccio hit straight back at the start of the second, breaking in game two for a 2-0 lead, and that set was decided by an outstanding 17/18 (94%) on first-serve points. In the decider he broke in game three for 2-1 and again in game nine to close it out at 6-3.
The key number is Brancaccio's serve under pressure: he saved 4 of 5 break points in the match, including both he faced in the third set, and won 13 of his 14 service games. Llamas Ruiz actually finished with more aces (3 to 1) and won more return points overall (32 to 30), but converted just one of his eight break chances.
