Luciano Darderi came from a set down to beat Nuno Borges 6-4 3-6 7-5 at Montreal. His return proved decisive, as he finished with three breaks on the board, including the crucial one in the 11th game of the deciding set.
Borges edged the opener 6-4 with a break in the ninth game, but Darderi levelled by taking the second set 6-3, breaking for 3-1. The decider swung back and forth: Darderi broke for 4-3, Borges replied immediately to make it 4-4, and Darderi broke again in the 11th game before serving out the match.
Borges hammered 17 aces and won 81% of his first-serve points, yet could not close it out. Darderi, by contrast, won 13 of his 15 service games and saved 83% of the break points he faced, with the match finishing level at 92 points each.
