Bonzi defeated Van De Zandschulp 7-6, 6-4 at Winston-Salem, taking the opening set in a tie-break and breaking early in the second. He won the key moments on return, converting two breaks in a tight straight-sets win.
Van De Zandschulp broke first in game three of the opener, but Bonzi levelled in game six and then clinched the tie-break. In the second set, Bonzi grabbed the only break in the opening game and held on to close out the match.
Van De Zandschulp fired 12 aces and saved 8 of 10 break points, yet Bonzi still came out on top with 82 total points to 75. The difference was return play: Bonzi won 37 receiving points, including 64% on second-serve returns, against just 21 for his opponent.
