Alex Bolt defeated James McCabe 7-6, 7-6 in Washington, winning both sets in tiebreaks. The Australian's serve was the deciding factor: he won 95% of first-serve points in the opening set and 83% overall, while McCabe committed five double faults to Bolt's two.
The first set saw no break points for either player, pushing it to a tiebreak where Bolt edged ahead. The second set had three breaks: McCabe broke for 3-1, Bolt levelled at 4-3, and then after games reached 6-6, Bolt won the tiebreak to seal the match. Bolt converted his only break chance and saved two of three break points faced.
Bolt's first-serve dominance (35 of 42 points won) and return efficiency (30 of 46 receiver points) were key. He also out-aced McCabe 7-6 and won 13 of the 12 service games each played, but McCabe fought well, saving three of four break points.
