Bencic broke early in the opener and again at 4-6 to take it, but Putintseva erased an early deficit in the second, broke at 6-5 and forced a decider. The third set turned at 4-3, when Putintseva broke, then sealed the win with another break at 6-3.
Putintseva's return game was the difference: she won 45 receiving points to Bencic's 33 and converted four break points. Bencic hit eight double faults and no aces, yet still won more service points overall (62-53); Putintseva's breaks at crucial moments decided the match.
