M. Alcala Gurri defeated F. Bondioli 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of Cordenons, Italy Men Singles, dominating from the baseline and converting five of six break points. The winner won 71% of first-serve points and 60% of second-serve points, while Bondioli struggled to hold serve, winning only one of six service games.
The first set saw four breaks: Alcala Gurri broke in game 1 (0-1), Bondioli replied immediately (1-1), but Alcala Gurri broke again in game 3 (1-2) and added a decisive break at 2-5. In the second set, Alcala Gurri raced to a 5-0 lead with breaks in games 1 (0-1), 3 (0-3), and 5 (0-5), then served out the bagel. Alcala Gurri won eight consecutive games from 2-2 in the first set to 0-1 in the second.
Alcala Gurri’s return was the key: he won 31 of 42 receiver points (74%) and 18 of 24 second-serve return points (75%). Bondioli saved 9 of 14 break points (64%) but could not prevent the rout, hitting four double faults and winning only 50% of first-serve points.
